Join Graham Waterton, author and former British Army officer, as he shares the remarkable true story of his uncle, Flight Lieutenant Brian Slade, the youngest bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. In this compelling talk, Waterton delves into the life of a teenage boy from Hemel Hempstead who, driven by an insatiable dream to fly, falsified his age to join the RAF at just 16. Within months, Brian earned his pilot’s wings and embarked on an astonishing wartime career that would see him rise to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, earn the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), and leave an indelible mark on Bomber Command history—all before his tragic death at age 19.
Waterton will recount Brian’s journey, from his early days flying Vickers Wellingtons—where he earned the nickname “The Boy Slade” and pioneered target-marking techniques—to his role as a skilled Lancaster pilot in the elite Pathfinder Force. Drawing from his book, he’ll explore Brian’s incredible tally of 59 missions, including his participation in the legendary 1,000-bomber raids and critical operations like the Peenemünde rocket site raid. Through vivid storytelling, Waterton brings to life the relentless dangers Brian faced, the technological innovations he helped advance, and the youthful courage that set him apart in a war that claimed so many.
This talk also offers a personal perspective, as Waterton reflects on the emotional impetus behind his research: uncovering the full story of his uncle’s heroism and the profound impact of his loss on their family. Enhanced with rare photographs and insights from tracing the sole survivor of Brian’s final mission over Berlin in August 1943, Waterton paints a moving portrait of a young man whose unique legacy endures as one of WW2’s most extraordinary tales. Expect an evening of history, heroism, and heartfelt remembrance that honors the sacrifices of a generation.
