We have recently passed the 50th anniversary of the official declaration of victory that brought the Dhofar Campaign to a close. This largely overlooked conflict, often referred to as Britain’s ‘secret war’ in the Arabian Peninsula, remains one of the most successful counter-insurgency operations of the modern era.
In this illustrated talk, Peter Williams provides a clear and authoritative examination of the campaign’s strategic course, key battles, and political context. He then draws on his own first-hand experience as a seconded British officer serving with a Baluchi infantry battalion in Dhofar during the immediate post-war period.
Peter’s account offers rare insight into the operational realities, the multinational forces involved, and the challenges of maintaining stability in the rugged Jebel terrain after the formal end of hostilities. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of both the military history and the personal dimension of this fascinating but under-reported chapter in British and Omani military history.
