The Tank Battle at Kursk July 1943
Possibly the largest tank battle in the world occurred at Kursk in the Ukraine between 5-14 July 1943. It was the third and final German summer offensive of the Great Patriotic War during 1941-5. Previous summer offensives had always been negated by Soviet counter moves during the winters following failure at Moscow 1941-2 and Stalingrad 1942-3. Each time the invading German armies had been ‘hollowed out’ rather like Putin’s Russian invading army in the Ukraine today. Is this a historical parallel? Trumpeted as third Soviet turning point of the Second World War, Robert Kershaw re-examines who in fact won at Kursk and how it impacted upon the outcome of the epic struggle between these titans on the Russian Front.
