Rome, during those long centuries of Pax Romana and imperial expansion, faced many foes. Few of these achieved the same level of success, albeit temporary, as Boudica’s Rebellion in 60 – 61 AD. The rebel queen galvanised an entire society, tribes which Rome had thought quiescent, destroyed a vexillation from IX Legion Hispana, wiped out the new colonial capital at Colchester, destroyed the great trading hub of Londinium and ravaged the collaborators at Verulamium . She came close to wiping out the whole of Roman settlement and administration, exacting a fearful price from those who stood in her way. Imperial Governor Suetonius Paulinus with a vastly inferior force finally brought her great horde to a battle of annihilation. A terrible retribution followed but the legend of Boudica never died, nor ever will.

There is a small car park and lay-by opposite St John’s Place on Lower Road (for approx. 20 cars). Parking is also allowed on single yellow lines on Lower Road after 6pm. Alternative car parking is available at The Clubhouse, Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club (SP2 9NY) and a pathway connects to St John’s Place.
