Simon Akam will discuss his work on the evolution of the British Army since 9/11, whether the military will learn from its experiences over the past twenty years, the impact of the Afghanistan withdrawal, the process of researching and writing the book and the reaction it has received on publication.

Born in Cambridge, Simon held a Gap Year Commission in the British Army before reading English Literature at Oxford University. He later won a Fulbright scholarship to study at Columbia Journalism School. Following graduation, he worked at The New York Times and in West Africa as a freelance correspondent for Reuters and the Economist. In 2010 he won the professional strand of the Guardian’s International Development Journalism Competition.
